The Mainichi Shimbun is Japan’s oldest newspaper with an archive that stretches back over 100 years through the Meiji, Showa and Taisei eras. The archive contains a vast and thorough collection of images from Japan’s recent history including an unparalleled Japanese documentation of WWII.
With regional editions and photographers based all over Japan The Mainichi is a valuable resource for Japanese news and archive pictures and footage. The Yomiuri Shimbun is considered the largest newspaper in the world by circulation. It was launched in 1874 and has an archive that stretches back through the whole modern era of Japan. They have a thorough image collection from Japan’s recent history including Japanese documentation of WWII.
