Cochran's dishwasher patent, 1886. Printed patent drawing of the dishwasher produced by US inventor Josephine Garis Cochran (1839-1913), later known as Cochrane. Her design was the first to use water pressure to clean the dishes. Earlier designs had used mechanical scrubbers. Cochrane was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.
