El Nino Phenomenon Death Valley (1998)

The valley is almost completely surrounded by mountain ranges, some of which can be seen on the horizon. Summer temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius. Rain is very rare, and consequently the region is almost devoid of life. After rain, however, seeds in the soil germinate and flowers grow rapidly, reproduce, and lay down seeds to await the next rains. The rainfall which caused this growth was caused by the 1998 El Nino event in the Pacific Ocean some distance to the west.
