EDITORIAL USE ONLY Stephen William Hawking (born 1942), British physicist. Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. His 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, became a bestseller. Hawking is confined to a wheelchair due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He has received many awards for his work, including the prestigious Wolf Prize in Physics. Hawking was made a Companion of Honour in 1989.
