The greyish particles in clay soils stick together forming heavy soils with poor drainage. They are usually very fertile, however. In contrast, light brown sandy soils are free-draining and easy to work, but are frequently infertile. Loam soil is a balanced soil type with a dark brown colour. It is easy to work and rich in nutrients.
