Multiple gene transcripts. Coloured Scanning Elec- tron Micrograph (SEM) of a gene duplicated many times in the midge insect Chironomus sp. (family: Chironomidae). Here, dozens of copies of the gene appear fluffy. One coiled gene is at upper centre. The gene transcribed is known as Balbiani ring 2. It codes for a fibrous protein which forms the tube in which the midge larva lives. Transcription is the process by which a gene is replicated into RNA (ribonucleic acid), copies by which the gene expresses itself and forms specific proteins. This gene occurs on chromosome 4, a giant (poly- tene) chromosome in the salivary gland of the midge. Magnification: x15,200 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x50,000 at 8x10 inch size.
