DNA. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of DNA released from an osmotically shocked T4 bacteriophage. The DNA molecule, measuring 56 microns in length, is packed into the tiny head (85x110 nanometres) of the phage. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect only bacteria; T4 being specific to Escherichia coli. They infect bacteria in order to reproduce and do so by means of the tail which functions as a syringe, injecting the DNA into the host cell. Magnification: x36,000 at 5x7cm size.
