Steffen Glaser, German physical chemist. Professor Glaser's research includes quantum computing using NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) techniques. He is holding a model of the molecule (tert-butoxy- carbonyl-[C2-N-D2-glycine] fluoride), designed to have five atoms with their nuclear spins linearly- coupled. The five spins (a magnetic quantum property) form a 5-bit quantum computer. The spins in a liquid solution of this molecule are switched using radio-frequency pulses. The effects are monitored using a superconducting magnet (upper right). This quantum computer has been used to solve mathematical problems. Glaser works at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany.
