Louis Pasteur, (1822-1895), French chemist and microbiologist. He is considered the greatest physician of all time and the 'father' of the germ theory of diseases. He strongly believed that diseases were caused by tiny organisms transmitted from individual to individual. Pasteur devised the food preservation process known as pasteurization, whereby milk, wine or food are heated to high temperatures for short periods to kill micro- organisms. His researches also lead to the development of two vaccines, against anthrax and rabies. He founded the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France to administer the rabies vaccine.
