The tumour in the node has spread from a carcinoma of the pharynx (the tube that extends from the oesophagus, or gullet, to the base of the skull). Cancer cells divide rapidly in a chaotic manner. They often form clumps (tumours) that may destroy surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). Treatments for cancer include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgical excision of affected tissues. The lymph nodes are an important part of the body's defence against infection, preventing foreign particles from entering the blood stream.
