Thyroid disease. Light micrograph of a section through a thyroid gland affected by Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Two lymphoid follicles (upper left and centre right) with germinal centres are seen. The tissue and remaining follicles (round, pink) are filled with a jelly-like solid (colloid). The thyroid gland is situated in the neck, and controls the metabolic rate of the body. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, caused by the production of antibodies against the body's own thyroid gland. This renders the thyroid unable to produce hormones leading to hypothyroidism. Treatment consists of thyroid hormone replacement drugs. Magnification unknown.
