Heart bypass surgery. Masked surgical team perform a triple heart bypass operation in a hospital operating theatre. This open heart surgery enables blocked coronary arteries to be bypassed using replacement veins taken from the leg. In the foreground a technician monitors a heart-lung machine which takes over the function of the heart and lungs during the procedure. Tubes have been attached to major blood vessels of the patient's heart to redirect blood flow. Deoxygenated blood then passes from the patient's main veins into the heart-lung machine, it is oxygenated, warmed, and pumped back into the patient's body.
