From the implanted receiver run electrodes inserted deep in the cochlear of the inner ear, enabling impulses to reach the brain. The wire at lower frame leads to a sound processor box. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. A cochlear implant gives the patient an awareness of sounds and speech and assists the patient to lip-read.
