Bacteriology. Bacteriology glassware containing samples. The glassware includes test tubes (at upper right), flasks (at upper left), petri dishes (at centre) and trays of reaction vessels (at lower left). Test tubes and flasks are used to store liquid samples. Petri dishes are filled with a nutrient such as agar gel, which here is coloured red. Samples are smeared across the gel and microorganisms in the sample grow to form colonies. Microorganisms from these colonies can then be removed and added to the reaction vessels. Tests, such as adding an antibiotic, can be performed in these vessels.
