It is from De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem (The Seven Books On The Structure of the Human Body, 1543) by the Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-64). This was the first accurate book on human anatomy and challenged the widely-accepted teachings of the Roman physician Galen. The illustrations were made directly by him or under his direction.
