The Galilean moons are the largest of Jupiter's sixteen moons and are as large as some of the solar systems' smaller planets. The moons were first discovered by the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1609-10. Images taken by the Hubble space telescope; these images are sharper than those obtainable from the ground, allowing Hubble to study details on the moons' surface.
