Drug research on human tissue. Testing the effects of a drug on tissue samples from the human colon (large intestine). The drug is constantly fed onto the surface of the three samples (lower frame) through plastic tubing. This process is called perfusion. The effects of the drug on the tissues' properties are measured by the black box above each sample. The equipment, which is smaller than many systems and will become fully automated, is being developed by Pharmagene. They believe that better results are achieved by testing drugs for humans on human and not animal tissue. This idea is supported by animal rights groups.
