The Endeavour (date unknown)
Endeavour, the ship used by Captain James Cook during his great voyage of exploration of 1768- 1771. On this voyage he carried observers to Tahiti to watch a transit of the planet Venus in front of the Sun. The voyage was also to explore the southern oceans in the search for the great southern continent, which was assumed to exist. Cook instead discovered New Zealand, charting its coast for half a year, before finding south- eastern Australia in April 1770. Cook charted its east coast and navigated unscathed through the Great Barrier Reef. He won fame by insisting on a fruit-rich diet to prevent scurvy. Cook was killed by Hawaiian islanders in 1778, on his 3rd voyage.
