A garden bumblebee, Bombus hortum, collecting nectar from a flower. Bumblebees are large, loud- humming bees of the family Bombini. They have a thick coat of hair, most species being dark brown or black banded with yellow, orange or white. They have long proboscises and are able to take nectar from the deepest blossoms; some plants are almost entirely dependent on bumblebees for their fertilisation. Most species of bumblebee live in small colonies, usually in underground hollows lined with moss or grass. As with honey bees, each colony consists of a queen and a number of infertile female workers.
