Ants. Unidentified ants (family Formicidae). Ants are social insects, living in colonies that may comprise several million individuals. Most members of a colony are workers. In some species, certain workers possess large, powerful jaws (as seen here, upper left and right) that may be used for cutting food. If the jaws are used principally to defend the colony from attackers, the workers are referred to as soldiers.
