Arrow worm. Macrophotograph of an arrow worm, Chaetognatha phylum, a type of marine mollusc found in plankton. The worm's head is at lower left and its tail at upper right. The arrow worm feeds on plankton, capturing other organisms with a set of claws in the head. They mostly live in the surface levels of the oceans of the world, though some species have adapted to a deeper existence. Arrow worms are an example of a 'living fossil', having remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. There is little diversity in the Chaetognatha phylum, which only contains about fifty species split into seven genera. Magnification: x7 at 35mm size.
