Swollen abdomen in cirrhosis, CT scan
Swollen abdomen in cirrhosis. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the swollen abdomen of a 57-year-old female patient with cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C infection. Cirrhosis is a chronic condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long-term damage. It is most commonly caused by alcohol, hepatitis B, hepatitis C (as here) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Here, the patient's liver and spleen have become enlarged (hypertrophy) and there is an abundance of peripheral ascites (abnormal fluid buildup). The blood vessels are also dilated, showing signs of hypertension (high blood pressure).
