In the early morning of February 17, 1944, Truck, one of the most important strategic bases of the Imperial Japanese Navy, was attacked by a large fleet of the U.S. Task Force 58 with 9 aircraft carriers, 6 battleships, 10 cruisers, 40 destroyers, and 9 submarines. A large number of transports sank to the bottom of the sea with many generals on board.
