Tsunami surged into Kesennuma Bay, sweeping away cars, houses, and luggage one after another. On March 11, a massive tsunami engulfed the city, followed by a series of major fires. In Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, the tsunami washed away houses and cars in a muddy stream, leaving the city in a state of utter devastation. The water did not recede, preventing evacuation and rescue efforts. Residents were forced to stand in a daze as flames rose from a city submerged in a sea of mud following a powerful earthquake.
