k CMS detector, CERN CMS detector. Part of the CMS compact muon solenoid detector at CERN the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The detector will be placed around the large hadron collider LHC, CERNs highest energy particle accelerator. Proton beams will be accelerated and collided head on in the LHC, and the CMS will detect the resultant particles. The main goal of the experiment is the discovery of the Higgs boson, an elementary particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics, but yet to be directly detected as of 2006. A pilot run of the LHC is scheduled for summer 2007. Stock Photo - Afloimages
