Haloalkane test
Haloalkane test. Image 1 of 7. Test tubes containing a haloalkane and sodium hydroxide being heated in a water bath. Haloalkanes are formed when a member of the halogen group of elements is substituted into an alkane. Heating sodium hydroxide and a haloalkane results in a substitution reaction, where the halogen in the alkane is substituted by a hydroxyl group. A number of other reactions can then be performed to determine which halogen ion was present in the haloalkane. For a sequence showing the test see images A500/537 to A500/543.
