These Gram-positive bacteria cause listeriosis, a form of food poisoning that results in abdominal pains, fever and diarrhoea. Severe infections may be fatal. The bacteria are widespread in the environment, particularly in soil, and infect humans through contaminated foodstuffs. Sources of infection include milk, soft cheese and improperly cooked meat. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. Magnification: x25,000 at 35mm size.
