Foetus' face. Coloured 3-D ultrasound scan of the face of a foetus at 26 weeks (end of the second trimester). The foetus' left eye is at centre, with the nose and mouth slightly to the left and below it. The right side of its face is resting against the placenta (left). Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy. 3-D scanning uses computer technology to return more detailed images than conventional 2-D scans.
