Barn owl skull and inner ear model
Barn owl skull and inner ear model. Composite image of the skull of a barn owl (Tyto alba) with a computer model of its inner ear, constructed from 3D scanning data. The barn owl is a nocturnal predatory bird. It is a carnivore, using its hooked beak to prey on small mammals such as rodents, which it detects with its acute hearing. The skull length is around 8 centimetres. This specimen was photographed at, and the model based on work carried out at, the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), Paris, France.
