Dinosaur-killing asteroid, artwork
Dinosaur-killing asteroid. Artwork of the break-up of an asteroid similar to that which is thought to have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The theory is that a giant asteroid broke up in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter (the Sun is at upper centre). The asteroid debris eventually impacted the Earth, causing the extinction of the dinosaurs. Data from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has been used to exclude one possible origin, a family of asteroids called Baptistina. Artwork published in 2011.
