Meteor strike. Computer artwork of meteors impacting the surface of an Earth-like planet. Such impacts would cause devastation over a wide area, throwing a huge amount of material into the atmosphere. This would block out sunlight and lower global temperatures. It is thought that a similar single impact was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.
