Cut-away illustration of a pan of boiling water on an induction hob. An alternating electric current is passed through a coil of copper wire beneath the pan, creating a fluctuating magnetic field. If the saucepan has a magnetic base the magnetic field induces an electrical current in the pan that generates heat as it dissipates.
