Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of brain mass, seen here as deep indentations around the front and sides of the brain. This brain shrinkage leads to memory loss, confusion, personality changes and ultimately death. Alzheimer's is usually a disease of old age, but it can develop earlier, particularly in the case of inherited forms.
