Thyroid gland, light micrograph
Thyroid gland. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a human thyroid gland. They thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the neck. It is responsible for the production of hormones that control the body's metabolism and energy levels. Follicles are lined by a single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells (dark purple), which synthesise and secrete the iodine-containing hormones T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). The thyroid follicle is filled with a glycoprotein substance called thyroglobulin or thyroid colloid (orange), which is a storage form of the thyroid hormones.
