Driver ant, SEM
Driver ant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a worker driver ant (Dorylus sp.), a type of army ant. The workers are blind, having no eyes at all. They do not have a permanent nest, but bivouac in a mass overnight. They have a vicious bite. The jointed antennae protrude from just behind the mouthparts. The antennae are used for touch and smell. Magnification: x35 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
