Surgeon's instruments, circa 1800
Surgeon's set. This comprehensive set of surgeon's instruments is from France and dates from about 1800. It includes forceps, scissors, amputation instruments including a bone saw, knives and scalpels, a trepanning brace for drilling into the skull when treating head injuries, probes and catheters. Surgery in this era, before the advent of antiseptics and anaesthesia, was high-risk with low patient survival rates. However it went through considerable advances during the second half of the nineteenth century.
