Test tube of bromine water
Test tube of bromine water. A dilute solution of bromine is used to test whether a hydrocarbon is an alkene or an alkane. Alkenes are hydrocarbons that contain a carbon-carbon double bond. The number of hydrogen atoms in an alkene is double the number of carbon atoms. Alkenes can de-colourise bromine water, while alkanes cannot.
