Kepler-1647 double eclipse, illustration
Kepler-1647 double eclipse, illustration. The Kepler-1647 b exoplanet and secondary star transiting the primary star. This type of simultaneous stellar eclipse and planetary transit is known as a syzygy. The existence of the planet was detected using the transit method. Planets that orbit a binary star system are known as circumbinary planets. Kepler-1647 b is similar in size to Jupiter, and is thought to be in the habitable zone for the system. The Kepler-1647 star system is around 3700 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus. The discovery, which was made with the Kepler Space Observatory, was announced on 13 June 2016.
