Spin ice and magnetic monopoles, illustration
Spin ice and magnetic monopoles, illustration. Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical elementary particle that have only one magnetic pole. Some condensed forms of matter have similar properties, as does a form of matter known as a spin ice. An example is the residual entropy predicted when pure crystals of water ice are cooled towards absolute zero. A similar concept is that of a quantum spin liquid.
