Globular cluster NGC 121
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of globular cluster NGC 121. Globular clusters are spherical groups of very old stars that are tightly bound by gravity and orbit a dense central core. This cluster lies 200,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Tucana. At around 10 billion years old it is the oldest cluster in its galaxy, the Small Magellanic Cloud. Image obtained with HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS).
