Atacama rock art and astronomical observatories
Atacama rock art and astronomical observatories. Boulder with rock art of the Atacama people, depicting shamans and various animals. Carvings or abrasions on rocks are known as petroglyphs, and are a form of rock art. Shamanism refers to rituals that connect to the natural world and involves contact with good and evil spirits. Domes forming part of La Silla astronomical observatory are in the background. These carvings are attributed to the El Molle people. Photographed in April 2016, in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.
