Lead crystals, metal displacement reaction
Lead crystals, metal displacement reaction. Light micrograph of crystals of lead that have formed on zinc during a metal displacement reaction. Zinc is a more reactive metal than lead. When placed in a lead nitrate solution, over time the zinc displaces (replaces) the lead to form a solution of zinc nitrate. The lead that is displaced out of solution crystallizes on the zinc, forming the crystals seen here. The chemical reaction is: Zn + Pb(NO3)2 -> Zn(NO3)2 +Pb.
