Ice storm phenomenon
Ice storm phenomenon. A perfectly shaped octagon of ice hangs from a stop sign following an ice storm in eastern Kansas, USA. An ice storm occurs when rain falls onto objects, such as trees and power cables, that have a temperature of below freezing, causing the rain to turn to ice. The layers of ice build up until the weight of the ice causes the object to collapse. This can lead to power cuts but in this case, the ice has only dislodged itself.
