Volcanic destruction
Volcanic destruction. Aerial photograph of trees killed by pyroclastic flows on the slopes of the Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat Island, in the Caribbean Sea. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995, its first recorded eruption. Since then it has been nearly continually active, ejecting material and causing earthquakes. In the autumn of 1997, much of the island's populace was evacuated after a major eruption was predicted. Several towns were destroyed in the following weeks.
