Limestone pavement
Limestone pavement. This rock formation is caused by the erosion of limestone blocks. It is made up of clints (rock ridges) and grykes (clefts between ridges). The topography is produced by percolating water, which dissolves minerals as it passes down vertical joints in the rock, a process called solution-enlargement. The pavement formation is typical of a karst landscape. There are usually underground streams beneath limestone pavements.
