Evolution of the hip bone. On the left is the hip bone of KNM-ER 3228 (Homo erectus), discovered in Lake Turkana, Kenya, and dated to between 1.95 and 1.5 million years ago. In the centre is Kebara 2 (Homo neanderthalensis), recovered from Kebara Cave, Israel, and dated to about 60,000 years ago. On the right is the hip of a modern human (Homo sapiens).
