Greek temple at Paestum. Filtered view of the remains of the Temple of Ceres in the ancient city of Paestum, in southern Italy. These fluted, sturdy columns, which lack a base, are one of the best-preserved examples of Greek Doric architecture. The temple is dedicated to Ceres, the Roman equivalent of Demeter, the Greek Goddess of Agriculture. It is thought to have been built in around 500 BC. Paestum was founded by Greek settlers in around 600 BC, who named it Posidonia. It was conquered by Rome in 273 BC and its name was changed to Paestum.
