GFP (jellyfish) gene transplanted into mice eggs
GFP gene transplantation. Petri dish in which a jellyfish gene that codes for GFP (green fluores- cent protein) is being introduced into mice eggs. The transgenic mice that result glow a fluorescent green under blue light. The GFP gene may aid the study of cancer. This genetic engineering of mice is conducted by Professor M. Okabe at Osaka University, Japan. Okabe and his team obtained the GFP gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. A virus is then used to introduce the gene into fertilised mice eggs, and the mice are reared. GFP may be used to mark cancer cells or drugs in order to study cancer as it travels around the body.
