Fibroblast culture cell, light micrograph
Mouse fibroblast cell. Confocal light micrograph of a 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell. The cell nucleus, which contains the cell's genetic information, is dark orange (round, upper centre). The protein filaments that make up the cytoskeleton are orange and green. The cytoskeleton maintains the cell's shape, allows some cellular mobility and is involved in intracellular transport. Fibroblasts are cells that give rise to connective tissue such as collagen, the main structural protein in the body. They are important in wound healing. 3T3 cells are an immortal cell line used in biological research.
