Polymer poem written with an AFM
Tiny poem. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of a poem written in polymethylmethacrylate polymer by dynamic plowing lithography (DPL). This involves vibrating the probe of an AFM on the surface to be written on. This causes indentations to be made in the surface. The AFM is usually used to image surfaces, up to atomic level resolutions. The probe has a very fine tip that is moved across the surface. The probe is spring mounted, and changes in its position are used to build up a model of the surface. This poem is part of Stages, from Der Glasperlenspeil, by Hermann Hesse. Magnification: x33,000 at 6x6cm size.
